Drug Uses

Dermovate is a topical medication which contains clobetasol propionate 500 mcg/g (0.05% w/w). It is available in the form of cream 15 gm. Dermovate is used to treat a variety of skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, allergies, and rash. Clobetasol is a very potent (super-high-potency) corticohormon.

Drug Class Mechanism

Dermovate cream contains clobetasol used to treat a number of skin condition such as eczema, dermatitis, allergies and rash. Clobetasol is a very potent (super-high-potency) corticohormon which helps reduce swelling, itching, and redness in certain skin lesions. Dermovate exerts its effects by a nonspecific anti-inflammatory response. It is considered that this medication can cause vasoconstriction in the blood vessels of the skin and decrease collagen synthesis. Dermovate can be readily absorbed in the body through application in the skin. This effect can be increased with the use of occlusive dressings, or when the skin is inflamed. After it is absorbed, it is well-distributed in the body. It is metabolized as all other corticohormons.

How It’s Taken

Dermovate should be applied sparingly to the affected area once or twice daily. Therapy should be discontinued when control of the disease is achieved. First, wash and dry your hands before applying. The affected area should be cleansed and dried. The medication should be applied as a thin film to be gently rubbed in, usually 2-3 times daily or as instructed by your doctor. Avoid covering or wrapping the treated area. Wash your hands after use. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth or mucous membranes. If contact occurs, rinse with plenty of water. Dermovate should not be applied for more than 4 weeks. If your symptoms persist despite treatment after the prescribed time, seek medical help.

Missed Dose

Apply Dermovate scalp lotion 1 or 2 times daily to the affected areas of the scalp and rub in gently. The total dose should not exceed 50 mL in a week. Clobetasol scalp applications should not be used near an open flame.

Ask Your Doctor

Dermovate can be dangerous to be used in psoriasis for a number of reasons including rebound relapses, development of tolerance, risk of generalized pustular psoriasis (psoriasis with pus-filled lesions) and development of local or systemic toxicity due to impaired barrier function of the skin. When dealing with infected skin lesions, appropriate antibiotic treatment should be given. If infection spreads, treatment with Dermovate should be stopped and antibiotics should be given. Bacterial infection can happen when warm, moist occlusive dressings are present; thus the skin should be cleansed before a fresh dressing is applied. Dermovate should not be used for a long period of time. Children and infants should not use this product because of the risk of systemic absorption giving rise to adrenal suppression. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or lactating before using Dermovate.

Side Effects

Dermovate can cause side effects such as burning, stinging, itching, dryness, or redness at the application site. If these conditions persist or worsen, seek medical help. Dermovate can also cause more serious side effects such as stretch marks, skin thinning/discoloration, acne, extreme/unwanted hair growth, "hair bumps" (folliculitis) and skin infections. If these happen, seek medical help. Watch out for systemic manifestations of hormons such as unusual/extreme tiredness, weight loss, headache, swelling ankles/feet, increased thirst/urination and vision problems. Also watch out for hypersensitivity reactions such as rash, itching/swelling especially of the face/tongue/throat, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing.

Don't Use

Dermovate can interact with drugs such as corticohormons taken by mouth such as prednisone and drugs that lower the immune system such as cyclosporine).

Storage

Dermovate should be stored at a room temperature not exceeding 30°C.

What Are Generic Drugs?

Most patients receiving prescriptions today are choosing to purchase generic drugs; A generic drug is a copy that is the same as a brand-name drug in dosage, safety, strength, how it is taken, quality, performance and intended use.

Why Are Generic Less Expensive Then Brand Medication?

Today, almost half of all prescriptions are filled with Generic medications are less expensive because generic manufacturers don’t have the investment costs of the developer of a new drug. New drugs are developed under patent protection. The patent protects the investment—including research, development, marketing, and promotion—by giving the company the sole right to sell the drug while it is in effect. As patents near expiration, manufacturers can apply to the FDA to sell generic versions. Because those manufacturers don’t have the same development costs, they can sell their product at substantial discounts. Also, once generic drugs are approved, there is greater competition, which keeps the price down.

How Are Generic Medication Made?

Generic firms have facilities comparable to those of brand-name firms. In fact, brand-name firms are linked to an estimated 50 percent of generic drug production. They frequently make copies of their own or other brand-name drugs but sell them without the brand name.

Are Generic Drugs Safe as Brand name?

"Since generic drugs generally sell for less than brand name drugs, many people falsely believe that generics must be inferior to brand-name products. Generic drugs contain exactly the same active ingredients as the brand-name drugs and are just as safe and effective."
